Why it’s important to celebrate Pride at work

Before we go into Pride Month ideas for work, it’s important to understand why it exists in the first place. Pride Month commemorates a turning point in queer history: the Stonewall Riots. In June 1969, police clashed with LGBTQ+ protestors for six days in New York City. To honor the riot and the events that followed, many countries and millions of people celebrate Pride Month in June.

Many LGBTQ+ community members struggled during the pandemic. Lockdowns kept large numbers under the same roof as unsupportive family members or away from those that love and accept them. Whether your company is back in the office, working remotely, or a combination of both, it’s imperative to celebrate Pride and create a company culture where everyone feels safe and connected.

Ideas for celebrating Pride at work 2022

Now, let’s explore 5 ways you can celebrate Pride in the workplace this year.

1. Be an ally

The first step to ensuring everyone feels included and welcomed in the workplace (or any environment for that matter) is to establish yourself as an ally. When speaking to a person about their experiences, always keep an open mind and be genuine. There are plenty of ways that you can support the LGBTQ+ community as an ally. For example, you can:

  • Educate yourself
  • Support LGBTQ+ businesses
  • Be inclusive
  • Avoid stereotypes
  • Speak up
  • Use the right pronouns
  • Attend LGBTQ+ community events

2. Ask your employees what they want

Wondering how to talk about Pride Month at work? There’s no better way to ensure your workforce gets their needs met than to send a Pride Month message to employees asking them to share their ideas. Since Pride Month is about honoring and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, it only makes sense to ask your LGBTQ+ employees what they’d like to get out of it.

One way to do this without singling anyone out is to ask employees to participate in an anonymous survey. That way, people can give feedback without concern – especially if they’re not “out” at work.

3. Offer educational opportunities

Even though DEI discussions, training, and opportunities should be ongoing, Pride Month is perfect for raising awareness and offering educational sessions. But it can be overwhelming to know where to begin when there is an abundance of workshops, webinars, training courses, etc., to choose from. It can be helpful to think about the topic you want to focus on and then offer educational sessions that cater to a wide audience.

For example, your topic could be: “how to be a strong ally to the LGBTQ+ community” or “how to create a safer workplace for LGBTQ+ employees”. Whatever topic you choose, opening the discussion shows employees how important DEI is to the company and allows everyone to learn and feel included.

4. Evaluate your organization’s policies, standards, and practices

Is your company being as inclusive as it can be in terms of policies, standards, and practices? Since DEI in the workplace doesn’t have a finish line, there’s probably something that can be improved. It could even be your bathroom regulations.

By prioritizing inclusiveness, we can help address the unconscious biases that happen all the time. It can be beneficial to host a DEI awareness session and identify areas for improvement in the workplace and in company culture.

5. Create a safe space for all

As a business owner and employer, you’re in a unique position to turn your workplace into a safe and accepting space for everyone. Your workforce is guaranteed to appreciate that you’re looking for ways to celebrate Pride. Remember that Pride Month is in June but celebrating Pride is ongoing and it’s important to continuously think about how you can make the workplace more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
